Trash Odor Fighter

For the Febreze Trash Odor Fighter, I contributed the core technological transition from a traditional rupture framed refill to a highly efficient, frameless membrane architecture. Removing the structural frame required completely rethinking how the user interacts with the product to release the scent. By translating this natural user motion into the precise mechanical force required to rupture the membrane, we eliminated complex setup steps, reduced part-count, and delivered a seamless, satisfying user experience in a highly utilitarian environment.

Project Chocolate aims to explore an irresistible FMOT by applying sensorial visibility through Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) to coordinate the scent experience. Additionally, enhanced visibility maximizes superiority in the SMOT, while the preferred scent curates the consumer’s space.

While often perceived as a simple aesthetic choice, the refinement of the masterbatch color for the Febreze toilet line was the result of a deep-seated immersion into Japanese domestic culture. Moving beyond standard market positioning, I focused on the subtle nuances of ‘cleanliness’ as defined by the Japanese consumer. This color shift was engineered to harmonize with the unique lighting and architectural materiality of Japanese bathrooms, ensuring the product feels like a natural, premium extension of the home environment rather than a functional disruption.

To ensure deep resonance within the Japanese market, I deployed a CMF strategy rooted in localized trend forecasting and cultural empathy. Rather than applying global trends universally, I conducted ethnographic research into modern Japanese interior architectures and domestic rituals. Recognizing a market shift toward ‘quiet luxury’ and tactile warmth in the bathroom space, I translated these macro-trends into specific polymer finishes. This allowed us to develop a product that visually communicates premium efficacy while seamlessly blending into the serene, minimalist aesthetic of the contemporary Japanese home.

Compact detergent package, project Asahi

The project was titled Asahi, drawing inspiration from the disruptive ‘Super Dry Nama Jokki-can‘ launched in 2021. Just as that packaging innovation revolutionized the consumer experience by replicating the sensation of a fresh draft beer through clever structural design, Project Asahi seeks to deliver a similarly premium and ‘fresh’ sensory experience within its own category.

Decode the basic

Deconstructing the Form: This visualizes the process of expanding the primary communication surface. The bottle’s geometry was specifically refined to allow for the efficient, distortion-free application of packaging artwork, preserving a strong and clear presence on the shelf.

The ‘Kick-back’ feature was conceived as a dual-purpose solution for both volume optimization and user delight. By deconstructing the bottle’s base to ‘kick’ the liquid level upward, we achieved a more compact footprint and a flexible platform for the volume variations. This structural shift allowed us to engineer an exceptional gripping interface directly into the bottle silhouette.

By bridging the gap between technical efficiency and the ‘irresistible pleasure’ seen in high-end beverage packaging like the Asahi Nama Jokki-can, we transformed a functional necessity into a highly appreciated ergonomic highlight.

For the 2023 debut of Lenor’s pioneering odor-eliminating detergent in Japan, the structural packaging needed to instantly communicate advanced efficacy. Operating on a highly accelerated, multi-month sprint timeline, I partnered directly with the Brand Expression team to develop a bilateral 3D structural pattern. Rather than mere decoration, this tactile texturing was engineered to visually echo the product’s core technology. It provided an aggressive, highly engineered aesthetic that elevated the consumer’s first impression and established a disruptive visual language for the new category launch.

Morphological Exploration & Cross-Functional Alignment

To define the optimal tactile language for the launch, I initiated a rigorous morphological study, engineering 11 distinct 3D structural patterns. This exploration was not purely aesthetic; it was a highly strategic exercise in cross-functional alignment. Utilizing high-fidelity, shaded technical drawings to clearly communicate the structural intent, I facilitated critical review sessions with both the Brand Expression team and R&D scientists. Together, we evaluated each iteration against a dual-metric: its ability to aggressively communicate the ‘odor-removing’ technology story, and its technical feasibility for high-speed blow molding and structural integrity.

Design for Manufacturing: Translating Form to Reality

Creating a dynamic 3D pattern in CAD is only half the challenge; the true test of industrial design is executing that vision in mass production. To translate the selected pattern into a manufacturable form, I applied rigorous Design for Manufacturing (DfM) principles specific to high-speed PET stretch-blow molding. Working closely with tooling engineers, I meticulously micro-calibrated the pattern’s geometry. By optimizing draft angles for flawless mold release and adjusting the groove depths to prevent material thinning, we ensured uniform wall thickness and maintained the bottle’s top-load crush resistance. This technical translation guaranteed that the aggressive aesthetic intent was perfectly preserved without compromising manufacturing line speeds.

Single unit dose(SUD) detergent package study

Project Dashi focuses on developing holistic products that fit naturally into the regional consumer’s culture. It acts as a market enabler, driving growth by lowering the barrier to new technology while delivering a measurable leap in functional performance.

The strategy centered on building a market proposition that pulls in new consumers through frictionless onboarding. Simultaneously, Dashi focused on strengthening the product’s value proposition to convert current users into long-term brand advocates.

Living the problem

The foundation of this project began with the personal frustrations I experienced while living in Japan for several years. These daily observations eventually pulled me away from my design desk and led me to conduct research directly within the home environment. By analyzing the unique spatial constraints of compact urban living, I was able to define a specific set of design principles that directly shaped the user interface and the functional experience of the packaging.

While packaging volume is typically dictated by price points and unit counts, Project Dashi introduced a more human-centric metric: the ‘carry-weight’ experience. I analyzed the physical effort required for a consumer to lift and position the product from various heights, ensuring the final package weight was optimized for effortless placement within the home.

Ideation

The project’s roadmap was built to exceed the success criteria identified during our regional consumer research and interview phases. Each proposed solution was developed with a specific market-facing strength, ensuring the final selection was both data-backed and highly appealing to new & current consumers.

In partnership with the UK-based design team at Matter, I led an intensive journey of ideation and rapid prototyping. This cross-functional effort allowed us to refine the product’s form and function, ensuring every prototype was benchmarked against our core design principles.

Consumer test

To ensure the final design aligned perfectly with regional lifestyles, we conducted a series of comprehensive consumer validation tests. This process allowed us to identify the most effective solution—one that not only met the technical requirements but also integrated seamlessly into the daily habits and domestic environments of our target audience.

Technical readiness

To bridge the gap between design and mass production, I facilitated a comprehensive technical assessment alongside our global & regional manufacturing partners. We synchronized the package’s structural development with the processing engineering of the local production lines, ensuring that every design detail was fully optimized for manufacturing feasibility without compromising the user experience.

Cross-Brand Synergy & Capital Efficiency

Following the strategic groundwork of our advanced concepts, I led the commercial packaging development for the 2019 Asia launch of the Shu Uemura Unlimited Breathable Lasting Foundation Cushion. The project presented a complex dual-challenge: I needed to translate the foundation’s “weightless” and “breathable” chemical formula into a premium physical object, while strictly adhering to a highly constrained, minimum manufacturing budget.

Minimalist Execution for the ‘On-the-Go’ Consumer

With the internal mechanics secured, I designed the exterior to be the ultimate “fuss-free travel companion.” I stripped away unnecessary visual weight, arriving at the purest, simplest geometric design that perfectly visually communicated the “breathable” nature of the makeup inside. The resulting compact maximized functional density—housing the high-performance SPF 36 formula securely while maintaining an ultra-thin, minimalist silhouette.

Playful & collectable

Before a physical product reaches the retail shelf, it begins as a structural hypothesis. In 2018, I led an advanced design study for L’Oréal Group’s premium brand, Shu Uemura, with the explicit goal of disrupting traditional cosmetic form factors. The objective was to move away from static, pre-filled palettes and design a system that catered to the growing consumer demand for bespoke beauty and hyper-customization. I wanted to create a packaging architecture that empowered the consumer to become the curator of their own product.

To achieve this, I developed a highly tactile, modular packaging system. The design allowed consumers to collect individual color pods and seamlessly assemble them into a single, unified stack. Moving away from standard hinge mechanisms, I engineered a central pivot point inspired by the elegant mechanics of a traditional folding fan. This allowed the stacked color palette to slide open dynamically, revealing the curated colors in a beautifully fanned-out display. This kinetic interaction transformed the mundane act of opening a makeup palette into an engaging, highly personalized daily ritual.

This concept successfully merged avant-garde aesthetics with a complex, interactive mechanical design. While it was retained as an internal advanced framework, its technical rigor and visionary approach to consumer personalization were recognized at the highest corporate level. The concept was awarded the 2018 Most Innovative Package of the Yearacross the entire L’Oréal Group. This milestone validated my strategic approach to interactive industrial design and set a new internal benchmark for how structural engineering can drive the future of bespoke cosmetics.
